Social Action

Temple Beth Torah's Social Action Committee

The mission of Temple Beth Torah’s Social Action Committee is to inspire and empower the whole congregation to engage in acts of tikkun olam, repairing the world. By providing opportunities for the community to fulfill the mitzvot (sacred obligations) of tzedakah (charitable giving), g’milut chasadim (acts of lovingkindness), and the pursuit of justice, TBT’s Social Action Committee helps us put our Jewish values into action.

Organizations Supporting Israel

The Jewish Community Federation 2023 Israel Emergency Fund is a local community fund for the Bay Area. We are working in lockstep with Jewish Federations across North America to raise funds for urgent needs such as trauma counseling and emergency medical support, relocation, cash assistance and support services to victims of terror, and much more. We are working with core partners like the Israel Trauma Coalition, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, and Jewish Agency for Israel. As the needs grow and evolve, so will the funds and services.

Hatzalah - United Hatzalah of Israel is the largest independent, non-profit, fully volunteer emergency medical service (EMS)

Magen David Adom - Israel’s official representative to the International Red Cross

Hadassah - Help purchase medical supplies, essential equipment, and other indispensable devices for healing and saving the lives of some of Israel’s most severely injured victims.

Help SoCal Wildfire Victims

According to the JFEDLA Wildfire Relief Fund’s website, the money raised will “support our neighbors affected by this catastrophic event.” It states that “one hundred percent of your gift will go directly to those who need it most.”

Volunteer Opportunities

For those seeking avenues to enrich their lives while making a positive impact on their community, we invite our congregants to volunteer with Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley and create a meaningful connection between the introspective nature of Rosh Hashanah and the practical pursuit of personal growth through service. It's an exciting time to be a part of JFS SV with a variety of volunteer opportunities that embody the spirit of compassion and generosity.

Older Adult Volunteers:

  • Friendly Visitors to visit with an isolated older adult for weekly visits and to form lasting friendships.

  • Volunteers to drive older adult clients to medical appointments, accompany them grocery shopping and delivering items.

  • Russian speaking volunteers to communicate with clients and serve as Friendly Visitors.

Refugee Resettlement Volunteers:

  • Volunteer drivers to support refugees going to appointments, shopping and delivering items.

  • Mentors and ESL tutors and teachers to support clients learning English and getting oriented to life in the bay area.

  • Volunteers for the pantry to fill orders and/or restock.

  • Property owners with rental units/ADUs willing to rent to or host clients.

Visit https://www.jfssv.org/getinvolved to learn about all volunteer opportunities.

Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley is beginning to have more refugee clients living in Fremont, and they are seeking to recruit and engage volunteers in our area to assist with driving to appointments, and/or showing clients how to use mass transit. If you or anyone you know are willing to volunteer with JFS SV, please click here to fill out a volunteer application. Applicants must agree to the JFS SV vetting process. For questions, please email Lori Cinnamon at loric@jfssv.org.

JFCS East Bay needs volunteers to call affordable housing complexes to see when new apartments become available in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. If you are able to do this for 1-2 hours per week on an ongoing basis, you will receive training from our case managers and partner with other volunteers. This is a perfect work-from-home job for anyone who likes administrative tasks. Please email volunteers@jfcs-eastbay.org to sign up.

Temple Beth Torah is a proud member of the Union for Reform Judaism. We are a welcoming and diverse congregation, open to all.
