A Word from Rabbi Schulman - 6/19/2020

This past April, many of us joined in a virtual Seder that connected us to far flung family and friends as we told the story of our Exodus from Egypt.

This coming Monday all of us are invited to join a different kind of Seder. On June 22 there will be a Community Pride Seder that is a virtual celebration of queer freedom.

June is Pride Month in which we celebrate LGBTQ people. For many years, Congregation Sha’ar Zahav in San Francisco has led a Seder that ritualizes the history of Queer Jews. They use their own Haggadah as a guide. Their Pride Seder plate features different symbols including a cup of coffee, an uncovered challah, and a feather.

In light of the fact that people cannot gather in person for the Seder, Sha’ar Zahav will throw open its doors to invite everyone who wants to join on Zoom.

I think this is a marvelous opportunity to celebrate our fellow Jews; to learn more of history and experiences that may be unfamiliar to us.

The Pride Seder will be Monday night, June 22, from 7-8:30pm.
