A Word from Rabbi Schulman - 12/7/18

Gossip.

Honoring Parents.

Tzedakah.

Governance.

Business Practices.

Treatment of Animals.

Capital Punishment.

These are the seven topics we have explored in Jewish Ethics classes I have taught at Temple Beth Torah. In each session, we have examined texts both ancient and modern that illuminate Jewish perspectives on these subjects.

Notice that “perspectives” is in the plural. Anyone who tells you there is a singular Jewish viewpoint on a topic doesn’t know gornisht (nothing) about Judaism.

Next month, beginning Wednesday night January 16, I plan on offering a new three part Jewish Ethics course. However, instead of my choosing the topics, I want to invite adults in our community to offer suggestions about what you would want to learn.

Seven topics do not begin to exhaust the vast array of possible subjects. Let me hear from you what ethical issue you wish to explore.
