A Word from Rabbi Schulman - 6/23/17

June 23, 2017

Yesterday I received a message from a person whose email address I did not recognize. The sender identified himself only by his first name. Included in the email was an invitation to click on a link so I could read his D’var Torah for his Bar Mitzvah.

Now you would think I would be confidant in knowing who this person is. After all, the email was addressed to me and there are only so many young men at Temple Beth Torah for their Bar Mitzvah.

However, we live in a time when you just don’t know who might be out there who does not have your best interests in mind. There was one time when I stupidly clicked on a link that I thought was legit and yet it was not. What ensued afterwards was a harrowing attempt to retrieve personal data.

So what I did do yesterday? I contacted the lad’s mother. She assured me the email was indeed from her son. So all is well.

Why am I sharing this story with you? Because yesterday you received an email from Temple indicating that TBT is partnering with Kevah, an organization that promotes small group adult Jewish learning. The email asked that you click on a link that would enable you to respond to a survey about your interest in Adult Education.

Now I am certain that very few people in the congregation know what Kevah is. So if you have any hesitation clicking on the link, let me assure you, the email from yesterday was not a phishing expedition with a nefarious purpose.

Kevah and the survey are legit. TBT and Kevah really are exploring new ways for adults in our community to connect with one another and to learn together.

So please take a few minutes to fill-out the survey.

Click here to complete our survey to help us design a program that best meets the need of our community!

Let me also encourage you to share the survey link with folks you know even if they are not members of Temple Beth Torah. Thanks!
