The Purim Shpiel, a fun and entertaining tradition at many Synagogues, was started at Temple Beth Torah through a partnership between Sue Schwartzman and Lindy Passer of Temple Israel, Stockton. The first production developed during a summer vacation has grown in quality, complexity and enthusiasm each year.
Shpiels at Temple Beth Torah have been presented in a theatrical format, transforming our Synagogue with a portable stage including sound and lighting equipment to the needs of each year's production.
Every show is a new, unique production. The concept is usually developed in October, followed by script and music development. Rehearsals usually span about 8 weeks.
Even though our productions are modest, we involve many congregants and Temple service groups: young and old, men and women, boys and girls, just a desire to participate and have some fun. A typical production may have over 60 parts, most involving dialogue and singing. (I probably should say that our shows are usually comedies). Our backstage support teams typically involve over 30 people.
Perform, support or watch! Spiels at Temple Beth Torah are always entertaining and a joy just to be involved.
